portrait tutorial
Hello and welcome to my tutorial page .
My name is Kevin Bentley, artist at Bentleys Portraits
On this page I will try to show and explain my process of putting a portrait together.
This particular portrait is done on 19x25 velour.
there are many surfaces to use canton, pastel board and so fourth.
To start out I draw the out line and lay down a base color that all the other colors will lay on top of.
With velour which has a velvet feel to it holds a lot of pastel so you have to apply a lot of pastel, the base color I start out with is a cream color the paper color is grey .
Most artist go fro dark to light me I go from light to dark and highlight last.
Second I lay in the areas that will be shaded or are in the shaded area.
As far as skin tone goes I use brown .beige, blues green reds pinks and creme colors
because our skin is more than just white or black I use the same colors on everybody just different degrees.
As I said i go light to dark the hat is started out with blue as the underlying color and the darker black overladed.
Blue's and red are added in some of the shaded areas be cause to shade with black would be to dark the other skin colors of brown will go on on top of the blue areas but your eye's will see the blue in the brown colors.
Next the back ground is started and the shaded areas are darkened and the details are drawn in more shirt finished and that's it
